With the change of seasons there is a need to make a quick clean so you have plenty of space for the herbs from your Herb Garden! On the 15th of November is Clean your Refrigerator Day. We don’t know how it got started, all we know is that it is a very good idea. With the change of seasons there is a change of cuisine, and most likely if you haven’t eaten it yet, most likely you won’t. So, here are some tips for a quick clean.

For a quick clean all you will need is a garbage bag, a clean sponge, a container with water and dish soap, and perhaps a pair of plastic gloves if you are like some people that forget what they have in their refrigerator until it’s too late. Start from top to bottom, this will enable you to not only throw out the unnecessary items, but also wipe the refrigerator down. Start with the freezer down, if it is easier, spread out a garbage bag on the floor to help you sort if there are a lot of things. Otherwise, simply move things from one side to the other. Throw out anything that has an overdue date, if you can’t see yourself eating it in the near future, and if simply cannot recognize what it is.

Once your refrigerator is cleaned chop up the herbs from your Herb Garden and place them in plastic bags in the freezer to use later.

Whether you have an Aerogarden or a garden in the back yard, you may find yourself trying to figure out what to do with all of your crops. This goes both for your beautiful flowers as well as the crops that you’ve taken care of all summer. There are numerous ways that you can put them to use, both to help you as well as your family and friends.

You can utilize your crops by keeping them for the cold winter months through freezing. Simply cut them up and place them in plastic Ziploc bags and place them in the freezer. This way you can have a fresh reminder of the summer when the temperature drops below zero. If you don’t want to deal with freezing them simply share them with family, friends, neighbours, and co-workers. A basket full of fresh produce from your home garden will surely help improve any relationship. The same goes for a beautiful flower bouquet, wouldn’t it be nicer to give them to someone than to watch them quickly dry up in the garden?

If you aren’t big on bouquets you can do the alternative, get creative. Make a gift basket with herbs, simply dry them and place them in pretty boxes or bags. Flowers can also be dried and the petals used for sachets. Or simply freeze the herbs and use them later when cooking.

The Aerogarden will offer plenty of great produce and flowers, and eventually you may find yourself wondering what to do with it all.

A Little Tip for all of the Indor Growers

We received many inquiries about growing plants, fruits and veggies that are not initially offered in a seeds kit from us. We encourage everyone that has made the wonderful decision to grow indoors with our device. We will support any attempt of growing different and interesting plants and encourage you to share your experience with us.

Today we would like to talk about self-pollinating plants. The seed packages we offer you are designed so as to they can grow perfectly in your indoor garden. But if you decide to experiment with other things we have a little advice that will help you grow better plants. Whenever you plant something that is self-polluting – you do not have to worry. These plants will grow good. Examples of such plants are the orchids and the peas. But in other cases, when what you plant is not self-pollinating – always shake the plants a little from time to time, so you can help them pollinate. Bees won’t do that for you indoors, so you will have to help your garden a little bit if you want the results to turn out good.

Before you plant anything out of our seeds kit, please do check if it is self-pollinating or not. Aerogarden expects to receive any feedback from you on you experiments and wishes you good luck.

veggies, salads and herbs, but you will also grow exactly the ones you want at the convenience of your home during any season through the year.

Our wide variety of seed kits will allow you to grow delicious variety of salads like Romaine, green and red leaf, and make all your dishes even tastier with fresh thyme, parsley, dill, chives and other delicious herbs. What many people wonder about and have tried to do is to mix some of the products to grow together, so they have fresh salads and tomatoes at the same time, for example. We recommend all our customers not to cross the different type of seeds in one pod, but instead to put them in different small pods and then grow them together. This has proven to give much better results than the one pod seeds mixing. In addition, when you do that try to arrange the different pots in such a way, so enough light will reach them all when they grow taller. If you put different seeds in one pot, you risk to deprive some of your products from enough growing light as some of them will be taller and make shade for the smaller ones.

Learn how to take better care of your indoor garden and you will have the best products you can harvest.

We have had some customers come to us over the past 6 months or so who have purchased a Gourmet Herb seed kit and been disappointed (or pleasantly surprised) to find that the kit didn’t come with a cilantro (coriander) seed pod as they might have expected.

This subject has been due a blog post for a while so we apologise for the tardiness of posting it, but just to clarify, the seed pod in the Gourmet herb kit which used to be cilantro has now been replaced by thyme. The cilantro had a slightly lower rate of germination than the other seeds in the kit, and has been changed to Thyme in order to make it possible for us to continue to honour our germination guarantee on all Aerogarden seed kits.

So our apologies to those whom this change has disappointed. If you do still have your heart set on growing coriander in the Aerogarden, then we recommend that you purchase some coriander seeds from your local garden centre, and plant them in the Aerogarden using the master gardener seed kit, which allows you to grow your own seeds of any practically any variety.

If the plants in your Aerogarden are turning yellow and not growing…

When more than one pod in a seed kit fails to germinate, or seedlings show yellowed leaves or are stunted growth, chances are they are experiencing a nutrient deficiency. This is generally caused by one of two things:

Using water that is high in dissolved minerals (“hard water”, well water, or water that has been through a water softener), or

Nutrient tablets that were damaged by high heat or humidity, which occasionally occurs in transport or storage.
If your plants are experiencing these symptoms, it will be important for future success to determine which of these may be causing the problem.

Water

Water that is high in dissolved minerals can cause problems with growth in the Aerogarden and many areas in England do have “hard” tap water. If you are using “hard” water, well water, spring water, or “softened” water, you will experience germination and growth problems in your AeroGarden. The dissolved minerals in the water will block the proper uptake of the nutrients by the plants. Hard water is the number one cause of growth problems in the AeroGarden. Most water filters do not remove minerals.
If you think you may have high mineral-content water, we recommend switching to bottled distilled water (not “spring”, “drinking” or “purified” water) instead, which is available at most supermarkets.

Nutrients

If your Seed Kit experienced very high heat or humidity is shipping or storage, the nutrients may become damaged, causing the same nutrient deficiency symptoms. If your nutrients appeared to have dissolved and leaked out of their container in storage/transport please contact us for replacement nutrient tablets (if the item was originally purchased directly from us).
*Please note – nutrients which appear wet or partially dissolved in their bag are not necessarily damaged – if they are in twin packs of just two nutrients you can cut the bag in half and rinse out the contents in a cup of tepid water (including the nutrient tablets themselves) – then empty the contents of this cup into the Aerogarden water bowl. Be sure to store your nutrients in a cool dry place (a fridge is ideal) to prevent any further absorption of liquid.

We have been busy people in South West London, sourcing two new seed kits for all our keen aerogardeners, International Basil Seed kit and Cascading Petunias, which are an alternative to edible plants! We are proud to be the only supplier of these new seed kits in the UK.

INTERNATIONAL BASIL

The Basil seed kits produce a delicious crop for your aerogarden. As with all our seed kits, they grow at about double the speed of a ‘traditional’ garden without the mess, weeds or soil. The Basil kit contains basil from many of our European Cousins, with 7 different varieties of basil: Lemon, Napolitano, Thai and Marseilles (funnily enough from France) Genovese (Italian) and Globe and Red Rubin. These exotic new varieties of basil mean you can take your cooking to new heights, allowing the addition of fascinating new flavours. We have found that yield is continual, and you can begin harvesting from 3 weeks for up to 4-6 months.

PETUNIAS

A seed kit the females in our office have been waiting for! The Cascading Petunia Seed Kit allows you to brighten up the home or office as Autumn approaches. The seed kit contains a multi-coloured array of Petunias which we feel sure will delight and entertain. With the approach of the change of seasons and dark winter evenings, it brings a bit of colour indoors all year long.

The seed kit contains seed pods and plant nutrients for a full season of multi-coloured petunias. Flowers bloom in just 30 days from planting, and continue to bloom for between four to six months.

This youtube clip sums up the beauty of the petunias -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HoSqVU6FwDsOurs have only been growing for a couple of weeks, but are coming along nicely, as you can see from these photos. Check back in the near future to see how they are getting along…

They contacted us at very late notice and wanted to feature one of our aerogardens in a programme all about gardening. The aerogarden was sent, all was done and we waited with baited breath; we were set for a rave review only for it to be spoilt by none other than a fist pumping scot with bulging biceps…….Andy Murray.

The programme was due to be aired live on Monday 30th June at 7pm on BBC 1. As many of you are aware, with the tennis pedigree that exists in the UK, we take every opportunity to show the nation our talents, whether it be Chris Eaton, Laura Robson or Andy Murray, and so it happened that the Wimbledon Mens last 16 singles game between Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet on Day 7 of the Championship was shuffled from BBC 2 to BBC 1. All i can say was that we were rather dissapointed.

Pictures of the aerogarden that would or should have been aired are here, the chillis are looking pretty good, we are sure you, Adrian and Andy would have agreed!

The tomato plants are now at full height – even with the extended lamp height which is shown elsewhere in the blog. We are now cutting back and pinching the growth at the top to encourage the plants to bush further down below. They have started to flower and we hope that we’ll have shots of the tomatoes at some point soon. At the moment it is not the prettiest plant. Customers can clearly see why we only have three active pods.

The salad greens are continuously growing and being eaten by people in the warehouse. The height of the lamp is at the tallest default setting for the Aerogarden.

The Chilli peppers are now at the heighest extended setting. As with the cherry tomatoes they need cut back and pinched on a regular basis to ensure they are bushing out. The flowers are all over the plants and we expect to start cropping soon.
