Your may have noticed some small brown speckles appearing on the leaves of the lettuce in your aerogarden at the early stages of growth. Do not worry – some of the varieties of lettuce in seed kits like the Salad Greens are of a red-speckled variety. When the speckling first appears, it can look like brown freckles. These leaves will become much more sightly as they develop.

Over the last month or so at Aerogarden Towers we have noticed an increase in customers who are using their salad greens to feed their pet tortoises. It is well known that these beloved land dwelling reptiles are herbivores, typically eating a diet based on alfalfa (in the UK this is known as Lucerne), clover or dandelions.

Many customers have found that the salad greens seed kit can be used as an ideal part of a tortoise’s diet, because they are organic salad greens. Although several customers have taken it one step further – purchasing an aerogarden starter kit with a salad green seed kit solely to feed their salad loving chums.

“I am very impressed indeed and setting it up with the aim of providing fresh food all winter to my non-hibernating tortoises – perhaps an unusual use for it. I will no doubt be back ordering seed packs and bits and pieces.”

So if you own a tortoise and are struggling to find adequate winter food for them, get in touch with us at Aerogarden towers on 0845 170 7555 or sales@aerogarden.org.uk.

The tomato plants are now at full height – even with the extended lamp height which is shown elsewhere in the blog. We are now cutting back and pinching the growth at the top to encourage the plants to bush further down below. They have started to flower and we hope that we’ll have shots of the tomatoes at some point soon. At the moment it is not the prettiest plant. Customers can clearly see why we only have three active pods.

The salad greens are continuously growing and being eaten by people in the warehouse. The height of the lamp is at the tallest default setting for the Aerogarden.

The Chilli peppers are now at the heighest extended setting. As with the cherry tomatoes they need cut back and pinched on a regular basis to ensure they are bushing out. The flowers are all over the plants and we expect to start cropping soon.

Neither the tomatoes nor the chili peppers have started started bearing fruit as yet but as you can see the salad greens have been intensively used by around four people for the last week as sandwich filler. If we hadn’t touched the salad leaves they would be at least double the size.

The tomato plants – as you can clearly see – need the spacer pods between the three plants. The plants are remarkably robust for such a young age and we intend to plant them out once the weather is a little hotter on a regular basis.

The chili peppers have all grown at a fast rate. You can see in this photo the effect of natural light on the plants. The window is on the left hand side of the photo and it is clear that these plants are larger than the ones on the left. Again there are no signs of peppers as yet.
