On February 2008 we also started a blog to share knowledge, tips and answer more specialised FAQ’s about the Aerogarden range of products. Click here to go to our blog site or type www.aerogarden.org.uk/forum into your browser.
Q: What is aeroponics?
A: Aeroponics is a soil-free growing method in which plant roots are suspended in air within a 100 percent humidity, highly oxygenated growing chamber. Because the roots are bathed with ideal levels of nutrients, water, and oxygen, plants grow significantly faster, are healthier, and have a higher nutrient content than plants grown in soil.
Q: How big is the AeroGarden?
A: The AeroGarden is roughly the size of a breadbox and is sized to fit conveniently under most cabinets. The AeroGarden measures 16 inches long by 10 1/2 inches wide by 15 1/2 inches high when it is first set up with the lights at the lowest possible setting, and 21 inches high at the highest level. Currently the AeroGarden comes in only one size.
Q: What can I grow?
A: Salad greens, gourmet herbs, chili peppers, cherry tomatoes, cascading petunias, are all available as seed kits. However with the Master Gardener Seed kit you can grow almost any seeds or even develop cuttings from your garden.
Q: How much time do I need to spend maintaining my AeroGarden?
A: You can get away with as little as five minutes a month. You will need to occasionally add water, drop in two nutrient tablets, and provide minimal tending to your plants. Most of your time will be spent harvesting and enjoying you crop..
Q: How long can the AeroGarden be left unattended? What if I travel a lot?
A planted AeroGarden can be left unattended for up to two weeks, depending on the type of plants you are growing and their maturity.
Q: What kind of lightbulbs does it use?
A: The AeroGarden uses full-spectrum compact fluorescent bulbs exclusively designed for the optimal amount and type of light needed for robust, healthy plant growth. These will need to be replaced roughly once every six months.
Q: How Much Electricity Does the Aerogarden Use?
A: The entire Aerogarden system used less than a single 60 watt light bulb when it is turned on – 0.42Killowatt Hours for the amount of time it is on per day. For details on the “on times” of you aerogarden please see our blog post
Q: How long will my plants grow for?
A: Vegetable Kits, such as Cherry Tomatoes and Chili Peppers will grow for approx. 6 months, and you will be able to start harvesting in about 8 – 10 weeks. That gives you approximately 4 months of continuous harvests.
Salad Greens will grow for approx. 3 – 4 months, and you can begin harvesting after only 3 weeks. That gives you about 3 months of continuous harvests.
Herb Kits such as Gourmet Herbs grow for approx. 4 months. You can start harvesting your herbs in about 4 weeks, giving you 3 months of continuous harvests.
Flower Kits such as cascading petunias will begin to bloom in 4 weeks and will continue blooming for up to 4 months.
Q: What types of water are good to use in the aerogarden?
A: Using “hard” tap water (even if filtered or reverse-osmosis filtered), or bottled spring water, collected rain water (even if filtered), or softened water, can sometimes cause growth problems with plants in The Aerogarden. The best alternative is to use either standard tap water with a normal PH, or bottled distilled water, which is available from most supermarkets/pharmacies.
Q: Can I mix Seed Kits In a Single Planting in the Aerogarden?
A: Yes you can do, with similar types of plants, although we don’t generally recommend this unless you are an experienced aerogardener. This is because…
1. Plants grow at different rates and have different leaf sizes, some faster growing plants in mixed kits could over- shadow and block the light from slower growing plants. Experienced gardeners will know how to avoid this issue.
2. Our nutrients have been specially designed for the group of plants in each kit. If kits are mixed the plants could be under or over-fed, resulting in less than optimal growth.
3. Your Aerogarden comes with pre-set light cycles according to kit type. If you mix kits you could be sub-optimizing your plant’s growth by giving it too much, or too little, light.
Q: Do you ship internationally?
A: We can ship to countries in the EU – we usually use DHL for this. The cost will be calculated at checkout depending on the weight of the products in your basket. Unfortunately we do not ship outside of the EU.
